Growing up, I always thought of gratitude as simply saying “thank you” when someone did something nice for me. However, as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that gratitude is much more than that. It’s an emotion that fills your heart with warmth and appreciation for the people and things that make your life worth living. It’s a feeling that I’ve experienced throughout my life, often in unexpected ways.

One of my earliest memories of gratitude was when I was a child. My parents had gone through a difficult divorce, and my mother was struggling to make ends meet. We didn’t have much, but my mother always did her best to provide for us. I remember one year, my birthday was coming up, and I had been looking forward to it for weeks. However, when the day finally arrived, my mother didn’t have enough money to buy me a present. I was disappointed, but I didn’t want to make her feel bad, so I tried to hide my disappointment.

Later that day, my mother sat me down and explained that she didn’t have the money to buy me a present, but she wanted me to know how much she loved me. She said that sometimes in life, we have to make sacrifices and do without things we want so that we can take care of the things we need. I didn’t fully understand at the time, but looking back, I realize that my mother was teaching me a valuable lesson about gratitude. Even when we don’t have…
